Lost with Career decisions?

Cindersann asked:

I have been a stay at home mom for about 11 years. Before that I worked for a school district doing data processing and payroll for 10 years. I quit that job to stay home with my kids, but I did occasional part time work teaching computer classes, data base programming and some simple web design. I happened to get divorced about 4 years ago and I live in Michigan. At that time the economy was staring to slide and, of course, is now even worse. I have been job hunting on and off. I get interviews once in awhile, but no actually job.

I have considered going back to college to update my skills. The three things I have considered is:

Surgical Tech: This would be a complete career change for me, but seeing as it's medical, I'm thinking this would be the easiest to get a job in. But it would involve taking out a loan of about 15K. I'm not at ease with taking out a loan. My X had accumulated a lot of debt before we got divorced and it was such a relief to get away from it.

Web Programming: This also seems to be in demand, but I'm not sure. It would be easier for me to get into because I already have a Business degree and associates in computer information systems (although outdated)

Teaching: Would involve a big loan, of course, and probably take the longest. Only thing is I do have a natural teaching ability. Also they are laying off teachers over here.

Anyway, if someone could just give me some thoughts. What one of these sounds better? I've been in a rut for about four years. I think the big thing with me is I'm concerned that if I put in the time and money for college, I still won't be able to get a job. Normally I don't think this way, but it's the economy.

Thanks,

Cindy.

I think I'm going to say web programming, because it's pretty quick to learn, and you already have a little experience. Surgical tech would be a big change for you, while teaching doesn't pay too well in some places. If they are laying off teachers, then I don't think they'll be hiring for awhile, unless you want to travel somewhere to work. Good luck!

Hi Cindy,

As a college counselor, I come across people everyday who ar trying to figure out the right path for them so I hope I can be of some assistance.

From the choices you have mentioned, I think you should focus on web programming and teaching. I know that the teaching industry is taking a hit right now with the economy however, it will recover and it still is a more secure career route than most. My sister is going on her 12th year of teaching and she always tells me that it's the best decision that she could of made.

Web programming is another field that is growing fast and with your associates can be an easy transition. I would suggest making a simple "pros" and "cons" list based on these two choices and see which one fits your personality more.

You can also check out and find information about a variety of careers along with salary information and the proper steps to get to them.

I hope this helps!

It's great that you're willing and able to go back to school and update your skills! That said, there are two fields that come to mind: accounting and nursing. Relative to other careers, these two jobs almost always are in high demand. Of course, becoming an RN will take time and money, but for accounting, you just need an AA in accounting from your local community college.
